Shelter Dogs

Here are the other doggies in my life! (Unfortunately the dogs who have come and gone from the shelter before I started this blog won't be here, but.. It's Never Too Late to Begin!!)

Daisy-Mae
4-5
English Pointer

Daisy came into the shelter as a stray. Daisy is a HIGH ENERGY dog! She LOVES to give hugs (standing up - she's crazy..) and loves attention. This dog has more energy than I've ever seen in a dog. She loves to run - unfortunately with six dogs at the shelter now there's not too much opportunity for that right now. I will make a better attempt at running with her during our walks, but I'm not very good at running myself :-p
Daisy has a small house-training problem. She gets really excited and just pees. EVERYWHERE. Not the most admirable trait in a dog.. I'm sure in a situation other than a kennel with five other dogs she could be properly house trained, and I think a lot of it is her pent up energy.
She's a retired hunting dog and very in tune to birds. This is SO FRUSTRATING to me, because the shelter is on a watershed with TONS OF BIRDS. She points at them throughout the walks and it's really, really distracting. I've been using the Easy Walk harness with her and it helps a lot with her pulling issues.
Daisy is a really loyal dog. She's a sweetheart!! Never growls, gets along great with other dogs - she and Gus are great friends!! If she got the appropriate amount of exercise (TONS) she would be the best pet dog ever. She needs to find someone who can give her that exercise, who can wear her out each and every day. This person will be very difficult to find, but I hope something brings them in to see Daisy-Mae!!

Gus
1.5
Toy Terrier/Chihuahua

Gus was brought into the shelter by a young couple who got him as a puppy. They were expecting a baby and blah blah blah.. Bottom line, Gus is NOT house-trained. He had never been on a real walk before. His former owners kept him in a room all day, and only brought him out "when the weather was nice." He was extremely unsure, nippy, bitey, scared, growly, hyper, and just crazy when he came in. You could not get near this dog without him biting you - and he's got SHARP teeth. We had to use a noose collar on him that we could slip over his head between his lunges for our necks.. A couple months have passed and Gus is now a new dog. It's incredible what a little routine can do for a dog. He is still not house-trained, which I think is the only reason he has not found his home yet. We do the best we can with newspaper, but in a shelter setting you can't house-train a dog.. Gus is a bit hyper, but totally calm on the leash. He loves to play with other dogs, but is rough, so it's best to go slow introducing him to other dogs. He LOVES Daisy tho :) When there were fewer dogs at the shelter those two would run laps around the shelter, Gus couldn't keep up with Daisy and it'd wear him out good! Gus isn't what I'd call a cuddly dog at all. He has his own personality, makes his own decisions and sticks with them. I taught him to play tug of war :) I was playing with Daisy one day and growling at her (something silly I do when I play tug of war with dogs.. Probably not a good idea, because they mimic me!! Then when other people play with them or see it they think the dogs are mad!) Gus saw us playing and grabbed HIS tug of war toy and started growling. Now whenever I go into his kennel he picks it up in the hopes that I'll play tug of war with him :) He's a sweet dog now, listens well - will sit when you tell him to, he's really smart too. But not cuddly. This isn't the dog for someone who wants to snuggle with a dog all day long. He may become more snuggly in a home setting, but for now he's pleased to walk with you, play with you and be with you, just not in your lap :-p

Ozzy
4
Pekingese

OZZY!!! Ozzy came into the shelter as a stray. He appeared well taken care of at first glance, and he was most definitely someone's dog as you'll soon realize too, but he had some issues. His ears were in terrible shape. He had all sorts of ickies on the insides of his ears. A volunteer who was briefly with us helped to clean out his ears good and he hasn't had trouble with them since.
Ozzy is a real cuddly, snuggly lovebug. I walk into his kennel and he jumps on my leg (makes it about an inch off the floor with each jump :p) until I get down and pat him. He'll soon be sitting in my lap while I pat him! Sometimes I'll just pick him up and hug him! He's a real lover. He has an overbite, and refuses to eat from a bowl or a dish or the ground.. You have to hand feed Ozzy - which is what I mean by it's obvious he was someone's pet. He only eats wet food, and it's pretty gross hand feeding that :-p But we do what we have to do for the little guy. He hasn't had a single accident on my watch! He hold his pees and poops until he's outside like a good little doggie. When they chose his name I couldn't believe they chose Ozzy, cause my dogs name is OZZIE! They didn't know that at the time either :) I love Ozzy to pieces and would love to adopt him, but I don't know what Ozzie would think of him, plus, you can't have two dogs with the same name :-p I walk Ozzy along with Gus and Baxter now that the shelter has six dogs. One time, while walking all three, Ozzy decided that he was done walking. He sat down and refused to complete the walk. I had the two other dogs with me still, so I couldn't leave him there! And I'm always on a restrictive time table too. So I scooped him up and carried him the rest of the way while walking the other two. I'm sure that was a site :-p But I'll do anything for that little doggie. But his dislike for long walks makes him less of the right dog for me, and I'm very glad to have MY Ozzie who LOVES long walks :) Ozzy would be a great dog for a lot of different types of people. He's laid back, snuggly, cuddly, likes a shortish walk, good natured, loves to play! The other day we were romping around his kennel and he was pretending to bite my fist :-p He's a true lapdog. I hope he finds his home soon!

Baxter
4-5
Cairn Terrier

Baxter! Baxter is a Cairn Terrier, like Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Baxter is a cool dog. He's a bit shy, but once he gets to know you he's a real sweetie! He likes to get patted, loves to sit in the outside section of his kennel and look outside. When he first came in a tweezed a few ticks off him, and he didn't seem to care for me :-p But now he jumps up and down when I come into the kennel, wags his tail and makes me pat him! He loves his walks. He's a bit of a light eater, but seems to be a good weight. He was brought in by someone who said they found him as a stray. He likes to sit beside his bedding, on the concrete floor :-p Sometimes he'll get all his bedding piled up into a ball and hump it :-o Silly Baxter! The past few evenings when I've gone into the kennel, he's had some poops waiting for me. He pees a little too, but nothing drastic like Gus and Daisy. I'm not sure if it's a behavioral thing or what. I think with a home setting and routine he'd be fine with house-training, but the kennel can be stressful for the dogs. Baxter came in around the same time Ozzy did. I walk Baxter, Gus and Ozzy together and they all get along great for their walks. Baxter likes to chase things! He tries to chase motorcycles, bicycles, cars.. He's a silly guy :-p His personality is starting to show and I'll keep you posted on his quirks! I hope he finds a home soon, I'm sure he'll fit in great with a wide variety of adopters! He's pretty easy going, likes walks, not sure about toys yet... We'll have to try toys!!

Sebastian
unknown
Norwegian Elkhound

Sebastian is another new stray at the shelter. He came in and like most dogs was unsure. Quick movements and loud noises startle Sebastian. He's also a light eater, but seems to be at a good weight as well. I love his fluffy coat! He's a snuggler and bows and wags his tail when he sees you! If he spots someone who looks like they'll pat him, he snuggles right into them! Today he started the Daisy-stand-up hug with me! He's a cutie :) Sebastian is fairly high energy. The heat slows him down a bit, but he makes sure to drink plenty of water! I haven't seen any accidents with Sebastian, he's very well house-trained. When I take him out for his pee right when I get to the kennel he pees right away. He must hold it until I get there! Such a good dog! He's kind of a goof; that's the impression I get when I walk over to him and he starts to waggle his bum up in the air and stick his tongue out all over the place :P I haven't sat down with him yet, so I'm not sure if he'd jump right in my lap, but I think he would. He's a snuggler for sure! I'll keep you posted on Sebastian as I get to know him better!

Chino/Chico
unknown
Pit Bull

Chino is a Pit Bull who has become a part of our shelter family this week. He was brought in by a guy who saw him meandering about his father's neighborhood in Weymouth. For some reason this guy thought the dogs name was Chino or Chico.. I'm not sure why he'd know the name of a strange dog... but anyhoo.. Chino/Chico seems very nice. Not aggressive at all. He's in the kennel space right by the door, so all of the other dogs had to be walked by him on their way out. He sniffed at them, but didn't lunge or bark, which is good! I hope he finds his home, or a new home, very soon. Larger dogs seem to get aggressive just because they're in a kennel for too long :( For now he's a great dog. He's super strong, very muscular, in great shape and absolutely beautiful! I didn't get to walk him today, as there was help in the shelter today - yippie!! but I hope I get to soon :) I visited him inside his kennel and picked up his food dish when he was done. No troubles there! He did try to mark the entire kennel tho.. Not sure if that's a sign that he's already decided he's in charge or not! I will keep you posted as I learn more about Chino/Chico!
Friday I took care of Chino as I was the only one at the shelter.  I took him out first to walk around and pee and poop.  He peed outside, and pooped and then walked right back into his kennel on his own (I was of course holding his leash)!  He's SUCH a great dog!  He sits when you tell him to and waits for his cookie if you're holing one, or his food.  I didn't fluff up his bedding though - I went over to it and he stood on it and sort of told me he'd rather I left it alone :-p  He's such a gentleman!  He let me put his harness on him for his walk.  Through his walk he didn't pull at all.  He walked at my pace, peed on a few things, tried to see who was in a pontiac that was parked and talking to someone :-p  But he's a great dog.  He's the kind of dog you could walk through the woods at midnight and not worry with! :p  He seems quite loyal.  He's pretty young, he still has lots of energy and will jump on his kennel when you have a cookie - but as soon as you tell him to sit he sits right down and waits for you to give it to him.  I love this dog, he's great :)

And this is the shelter!
